木蝋は、櫨の木（ハゼノキ）の実から抽出され、古来より和ろうそくやびんつけ油、化粧品等に用いられてきました。
現在は国内で木蝋を製造する事業者は５軒もなく、その中でも化学薬品を用いない製造方法を続けている事業者はほとんどいない状況です。
